UoDx - AS EASY Using Buzz, wave table created, patterns emerge, a new generation of music begins |
||
Listen to My Heartbeat started as a simple idea: beating heart = rhythm of life. Adding to that, some organic sounds styled after Einsturzende Neubauten and Laurie Anderson a rhythm bed was established - invitations to participate were sent out. Using

Jungle
Fusion started as something alltogether different.

Synthogasm
A retro synthetic cacophony of percussion and rumble
started as a 'Yazoo' style song, with ENOesque undertones,
then spiralled out of control. Using

Hands
In The Air was inspired by Kraftwerk's "Boing
Boom Tchak" and Art of Noise style beatbox with a UoD twist. Using

BUFOmarinus
was inspired by Brian Eno's On Land - an ambient soundscape with a UoD
twist. Using

NOISEofART
The bane of modern existence is the petrol-driven power tool. To suck
or blow away ones own waste is somehow environmentally obscene. This
leaf blower-inspired piece is evocative of an Art of Noise boom box
track with a UoD twist. Using

ROCKandROLL
was inspired by the Gary Glitter glam tune of the
same name. Using

N
E U B I E Evocative
of an industrial experiment gone awry, this piece calls on atonal elements
and found objects for a minimalistic feel.
This track originally was going to be Neubauten ripoff but something else that was interesting emerged. Samples from Scotty's cupboard rummaging, cathedral-like tour groups and Scotty's "It's heavy" mix into a minimalistic experiment with a little "Plan 9 from Outer Space" mixed in. Using

ON
HIGH a return to simpler times with an ambient
twist .
This track emerged from some fiddling about in Buzz and heralds an invigoration of creative energies...or does it? This is the first starter piece after an extended break and invites participation. Using
Buzz, patterns were created, and then the file was handed on to others
to modify, add to, mutate and permutate |

- The live recording occurred at Club Buzz 19th February 2002, after a long period of real life and it was refreshing to see we could still coordinate 4 'puters and come up with something listenable (but sooo different from all the other pieces). We thank Club Buzz for providing us with new speakers (they sound really hoopy) and wOnKo's Minidisk was used to capture the result. We think we might have finally pushed the limits of what this recording technology is capable of and will probably arrange to play directly into a mixer in the next session, instead of pointing our speakers at the mike and hoping the stereo fields work out ok. |

Each UoDeer began making noise fron the start and no plan of attack was discussed - this just happened as you hear it. You can hear live negotiations of breaks and effects, computers crapping out and we played along with the airconditioner. The gear assembled was 4 PC's running win2000, running BUZZ. We had 3 sets of speakers - with aA and wOnKo sharing one set, afro_88 and utopienne on their own. A stereo microphone was placed approximately centre of the stereo field and connected to a minidisk recorder. What you hear here is largely untouched audio (with the exception of audience). Not bad all round seeing these guys havn't played together in over 6 months. The
resultant mixes are snippets of a much longer gig. |
