UoD live- Takes 1..3,5

Take 1 sounded like a simple idea: Get UoD buzzicians in a room, get them to collect their gear, tune in, turn on and freak out.

The result surprised us all. Not only did we manage to play together as a band but each music making member contributed to the ambiance to create surprisingly listenable music - no mean feat given the nature of the music-making apparatus and the complexity of timing, synchronisation, recording (via wOnKo's Minidisk and a|A's parents stereo microphone that was carried around the computer lab to do the live-edit stereo panning).

The microphone was hand held, there was no rehearsal, you hear it like it was.

What follows is an UNTOUCHED recording of the session - Take 1 is a triumph because of all the things that could have screwed up but didn't, and more importantly because of the unabashed talent of afro_88, a|A and utopienne..

Take 2 was an exercise to determine if take1 was a fluke. In Take2 we originally planned to have 5 buzzicians (UoD: a|A, utopienne, afro88 and wOnKo, with Guest Nuck) playing to a microphone stationed at the front of the room connected to a minidisk recorder.

Each buzzician was given 1/2 an hour to assemble noise-making apparatus in isolation of the others. After spending more time than we had planned doing this we were ready to synchronise copies of buzz (each buzzician playing a kick beat that more or less corresponded to the others). Nuck's computer crapped out at this stage and then there were 4.

Pretty well the first time we all heard what each other had built was when we had begun playing. This 9 minute and 20 second piece is the unedited result. You can hear UoD negotiating breaks and beat entrances, adding patterns and generally mellowing out.

The result pushed the 'primitive' recording techniques we were using, there is no stereo panning on this track - each buzzician is fixed in the stereo field. We are pretty excited by the result - we hope you like it too.

Take 3 played with acoustic texture and rhythm and resulted in an organized cacophony of sound with a dark and brooding structure. UoD (a|A, utopienne, afro88 and wOnKo) played to a microphone stationed in the middle of them which was connected to a minidisk recorder.

Each buzzician took nearly an hour to assemble noise-making apparatus. After spending more time than we had planned doing this we were ready to synchronise copies of buzz (each buzzician playing a kick beat that more or less corresponded to the others).

This 10 minute and 10 second piece is the unedited result. You can hear UoD negotiating breaks and beat entrances, adding patterns and generally mellowing out. We were pretty satisfied by the result - we hope you like it too.

Take 5 a, b & c represents smippets of a reunion performance recorded live at Club BUZZ. The performance is recorded in 3 movements. The audience loved it.

The gear assembled was 4 PC's running win2000, running BUZZ. We had 3 sets of speakers - with aA and wOnKo sharing one set, afro_88 and utopienne on their own. A stereo microphone was placed approximately centre of the stereo field and connected to a minidisk recorder. What you hear here is largely untouched audio (with the exception of audience). Not bad all round seeing these guys havn't played together in over 6 months.
