Some Effects
Changing the properties of the Sound

Back | Forward

Once we have collected generators that make our raw sounds, we then use effect machines to change how they sound. Buzz has a huge collection of effects that do all sorts of exotic things. A standard effect for drums it to fatten (Phat) them (make them more resonant and boost their volume) - to do this, we will add a FSMPhatMan effect processor to the mix. There are, however, lots of machines that have this sort of effect.

Right click on the machine view desktop and select the Phatman from the flanger group of effects processors:

Notice that an effects processor is distinguishable from a noise generator by it's colour (pink instead of blue). Next, snap the pipe between the Drum generator and the master by right-clicking on the triangle on the connecting line:

Now re-wire the machines so sound from the drum generator passes through the PhatMan:

As soon as you re-connect, you will notice the difference in the played sound (and you may need to trim the master sound again to stop it distorting. By changing the parameters of the PhatMan, you can change the timbre of the sound further. Right click on the PhatMan and select Parameters from the context menu that appears:

editing machine parameters

Each machine has different parameters, and I honestly don't know what half of them mean - by playing with the sliders, you can tweak the sound until it suits you - remember, music is a very personal thing:

Some effects machines come with a number of presets - that is, their designer has pre-loaded some states for the sliders to help you - to choose a preset, drop the list box and select one from the list (the PhatMan only has one preset apart from the default setting (wide chorus):

Triggered generators have their place but unless you use pitch-shifter effects or trigger your own samples, you have little control over the note they play.

To add a bassline with a pitched generator, go forward...
