100 Last Waltz (Revisited)

…so I made a second fold of Elias’ “Last Waltz” figure on the day of Lindy and Randy’s wedding, and visited Australia Post …

packaged ever so carefully, bubble wrap and box, sent to the other side of the world

…dancing all the way to Silverdale US, to the happy couple themselves.

So glad it arrived in one piece, so glad they like it. Fitting wedding present. What a handsome couple, the people are not a bad match either šŸ˜›

Now the couple live in a lovely glass pavillion:

Storage and Display

The most common question I get asked (apart from how do I find the time to do this in the first place – try not to think about that one too much) is what do I do with the models when I have made them:

Monthly storage in a shoebox on top of our china cabinet (no, not the most elegant of things, but practical until something else comes along). I like to display a couple of days back, particularly if there are some nice models amongst the month.

After a monthly picture is taken, the month’s folds are then archived in a plastic box (must look to source some silica gel sachets to keep them dry – humidity causes some to unfold). It looks like the archive box is about the right size – it is nearly 1/3 full and I am nearly 1/3 of the way through this adventure.

The aim will be to get these all out again and photograph them together in a 365 image.

… well, you did ask.

99: A DNA Double Helix

Talk about “life, the universe and everything”, this model is an intriguing exercise in pre-folding:

Organised ridges, counter folds of diagonals and the model seemed to curl in on itself in a magical sort of way. Interestingly it is composed of 42 base pairs – I wonder if that is a coincidence?

Folded from an A4 page, strangely, theĀ resultantĀ modelĀ is huge (as the reference stage suggests, but is has an inherent strength and rigidity that I found surprising.

You can try this one for yourself: http://erikdemaine.org/thok/dna41.html

March Done and Dusted

Wow, this month seems to have gone on forever:Looking back there have been sone awesome models in the month of March (which sadly raises the bar for subsequent months I guess) – hedgehog, jack-in-the-box and more.

Models put away in the archive box, a new month begins…

February, Done and Dusted

Month 2 done and dusted – looking back some notable models, lots of complicated ones too (hope I have not peaked too early):

Quite happy with progress so far, but with 306 still to do there is no time to relax just yet.

Tidy

Now storage is getting to be an issue – the shoebox is full and I am not through my second month, so I decided to buy a tidytub:57 litres, hope it is enough (the next size up seemed bigĀ enoughĀ to hide a body, and the size smaller was not much bigger than the shoebox) – did not think paper was measured such but there you go.

I think it will be really cool if/when I get to 365 to have them ALL in a photo, so they need to be stored, think this is a solution.

After the 366 ritual BONFIRE I can re-use the tub for papers and stuff storage under the house,

January, Done and Dusted

Wow, January is over and here am I with 31 models down, on the road to 365 all up … hope I have the stamina: When you see them all together they are … amazing – some tricksey stuff there that is throwing down the gauntlet to me for the coming months.

I will try to remember to do a monthly post with a summary – not sure I have the oomph to do it cumulative – will pack these away in a shoebox for now and start tomorrow afresh.

365 Days of Origami

So I decided to move this project to a blog, because it lets me index and be a little cleverer, sorry for any poor sod trying to actually follow this project as it has jumped around a bit.

My aim – 365 models, one per day for a year. Ambitious and scary actually – no idea if I can do it, willing to give it a try.

referenceFor your reference, the models, when photographed, are standing on a block of note paper some 17cm long. I will try to remember to include in the tag what shape paper is used to make it and what base it is derived from (if any) and if I remember the Designer of the model.

Rules (attempted guidelines at least):

  • * if I am unable (due to awayness) to post, I will, as separate posts, the next available day, catch up. Circumstances and busyness vary, sorry.
  • * models made from sheets of paper, white
  • * after the initial shaping of the unfolded page (square, rectangle, transverse polyhedra, whatever) no cuts, no glue
  • * model must be (hopefully) recognizably something
  • * ONE box/container model per month
  • * ONE compound model a month (ie. a model that uses more than one sheet of paper, combined into a single figure) unless a celebration day has a model that looks good but requires more sheets

…wish me luck
